What is cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside eye causing blurred vision. Ageing is the most common cause for cataract. Other causes are trauma, long term use of some drug, uncontrolled diabetes etc.

Symptoms of cataract are as below:

A) Blurring of vision

B) Glare

C) Frequent changes in eye glasses

D) Altered colour perception

E) Poor night vision

Surgery is the only effective treatment. This involves removal of cloudy lens and replacing it with an Intra Ocular Lens  (IOL). It is done through small incisions (2.2 to 2.8 mm). It is called phacoemulsification  or phaco surgery.

Advantages of small incision phaco surgery:

(i) No stitches

(ii) Quick healing

(iii) Short surgery time (20 -30 min)

(iv) Quick return to normal activity

Foldable (IOL) Intraocular lens

As the name suggest this IOLs can be folded and possible to insert in eye through very small incision. Once in the eye it unfolds to its original size and shape.

With different preoperative eye conditions and postoperative life activities, multiple  IOL choices are available for surgery.

  • Monofocal IOL
  • Toric lens IOL
  • Multifocal IOL
  • Multifocal toric IOL

Refractive Surgery

Refractive errors, such as near sightedness (myopia), farsightedness ( hyperopia) and astigmatism  can be corrected or visual improvement can be achieved by refractive surgery. This surgical procedure reshape the cornea using laser and thereby images are focused directly on retina. Other method involve IOL implantation in eye (Phakic IOL). Most widely performed type of refractive surgery is LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis).

Glaucoma

It is an optic neuropathy that is associated frequently but not invariably with raised IOP (Intra Ocular Pressure). It causes painless/painful loss of vision as it advances.

Diagnosis : By tonometry, visual field examination, gonioscopy, retinal examination etc.

Treatment: (i) medical – eyedrops and oral drugs

                   (ii) Laser

                   (iii) Surgical (Antiglaucoma surgery)
